Hi John, I would like to suggest you run System Update Readiness Tool to resolve certain conditions that could cause installing updates and other software not to work. If it does not work, I also would like to suggest you perform the following steps to reset the permission settings. Run the subinacl.msi file ===================== 1. Please download the subinacl.msi file from the following link and save the installation patch on the Desktop: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe-4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en#AffinityDownloads 2. Please go to the Desktop and double click the downloaded file. 3. Please select the C:\Windows\System32 folder as the Destination Folder during the installation. Later we will use this tool to reset the permission settings on the current machine. Note: If UAC (User Account Control) window is prompted for permission to continue, please click "Continue". 4. Click "Start". In the Start Search bar, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter. 5. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window: @echo off subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f @Echo ========================= @Echo Finished. @Echo ========================= @pause 6. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose Save when you are prompted to save the file. Type "reset.bat" as the file name and choose Desktop from the left panel as the save location. 7. Refer to the Desktop and right click the reset.bat file, then choose "Run as administrator." 8. You will see a DOS-like window processing. NOTE: It may take several minutes. When it is finished, you will be prompted with the message: "Finished, press any key to continue". If the issue persists, would you please send me more information for analyzing. For your convenience, I have created a workspace for you. You can upload the information files to the following link. (Please choose "Send Files to Microsoft") Workspace URL: https://sftasia.one.microsoft.com/choosetransfer.aspx?key=6a38f62d-7232-491d-9b5a-4c89ce009bf5 Password: 1hW#QYXW@P_ Note: Due to differences in text formatting with various email clients, the workspace link above may appear to be broken. Please be sure to include all text between '(' and ')' when typing or copying the workspace link into your browser. Meanwhile, please note that files uploaded for more than 72 hours will be deleted automatically. Please ensure to notify me timely after you have uploaded the files. Thank you for your understanding. Run Process Monitor ===================== 1. Please download "Process Monitor" from the following link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx 2. Right click on the downloaded file and click "Extract All…". 3. Follow the instructions on the screen to extract all the files to a folder, such as "ProcessMonitor". 4. Open the "ProcessMonitor" folder and double click on the "Procmon.exe" file to launch the program. Note: Please click Yes when we receive the User Account Control (UAC) prompt. 5. Click "Filter" -> "Reset Filter" to reset the filter. 6. Click the "Capture" (Reading glass) button on the toolbar to stop the current capture and click the "Clear" (Eraser) button to clear the contents. 7. After that, please try to perform a Windows Update process. 8. Before the error occurs, please click the "Capture" (Reading glass) button in the ProcessMonitor program to start capture. 9. When we receive the original error message, please click the "Capture" (Reading glass) button again to stop the capture. Note: By doing so, we are able to track the entire problematic processes. 10. After that, please click the "Save" button to save the log and send it to me. I will help you analyze it on my side. I understand that the steps are complicated and time-consuming. Your continued patience and cooperation are highly appreciated. Regards, Arthur Li - MSFT

Arthur, I have a similar issue as John describes. I followed your steps but when I ran the file from my desktop, the following message appears: 'subinacl' is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file Any suggestions? Regards Ross

I have been following the steps above, but I have great troubles. Earlier I was able to at least get the downloading process to get beyond 0%. When I try to update at your step 7, it won't download anything. I looked at the process monitor and found that there wre a bunch of access denied results. This has been very frustrating because WIndows Update had been telling me about this update for a couple of weeks, and it always fails to get anywhere. I am using System 7 on a Dell machine with 6GB of main memory, so there should be no problem in getting this going. What should I do now? By the way, I'm going to go back to filtering incoming messages while awaiting a message from you about how to proceed. I get the impression that this is an relatively important update, so it is frustrating that I can't get it into my system. DIck Kain Dick Kain While I wrote the above, it started to download, while I had the filtering turned off. But Webroot has twice put up a notice that it had automatically found soomething of concern, which it called trojan-downloader-tukpat. This is all while the downloader/installer is stuck at its 60% area. I'm almost incluined to trun off the whole downloading process and wait for a Microsoft answer. While I typed this message, it fialed again, with the same message - code 80070005. WHAT GIVES??? This is incredibly frustrating!! Thanks in advance. I'm going to exit your process now. I did save the process log, but I can't see how to send it to you. Please advise ......
